Just when you think you've heard it all, someone comes along and resets the bar.

Sadly, those who are looney-toons give us crazy people a bad rep.
How many things are wrong with the 7-year cycle and the Jubilee? Did they work, nope. They are lovely theories, but not practical in a fast-paced post-Roman Empire world.
Also, we still struggle against various forms of slavery, even today. Slavery is bad mmm-kay? Reinstating it would be terrible, eh?
Honestly, some people ought to be forced to take their medication...

Why give this credence by even discussing it?

It's not worth debating, it's SO looney tunes. I feel by getting uptight, it just gives views like that the oxygen they need to breathe, which I'm sure they crave.

I do agree with your points though....

Chris---I started putting these letters to the editor here so the other folk could see what mentalities are happening in eastern small-town NC. (Although Greenville isn't really "small-town," but you get the idea.)

Please don't get me wrong....It SHOULD be discussed and I'm doing the same as you, but my comment was more to note that I'm sure that this is exactly the reaction those 'people' were after.

As I said before...I agree with your sentiments exactly.

But the editorial smacks of so much ignorance and bible-thumping that it's hard to even begin to respond. I wonder if Mr. Wheatley would support slavery if his daughter were abducted and forced to work for sex-slave traders. I can't believe some of the editorials that make it to print in crazy a's paper.

Two very minor clarifications:

1. Although Jace uses the term "editorial," this is a letter to the editor, a letter from a member of the general public; it is not an editorial in the sense that it's coming from a member of the newspaper editorial staff.

2. Although most letters I post here come from the Washington (NC) Daily News, this one came from the nearby Daily Reflector in Greenville, a college town and not what I would consider "small-town" by any stretch.

Incidentally, and this is for those familiar with the letters from Triple R that I've often posted, you may be surprised to know that his annual "Halloween is evil" letter was missing from the letters page for all of October. Not that I'm complaining, but I was mildly surprised.
